About the Company
We are the premier regional vocal company providing educational and performing opportunities for artists, students and the community at large and promoting the arts through community collaboration. Obsidian Opera began in 1997 with a mission to develop community through the sharing of vocal music. Serving Central Oregon and the Pacific Northwest, we have provided singers and audience members with productions ranging from full length operas and one-act comedies to scenes incorporating repertoire written by the great opera masters as well as composers of Broadway musicals. This diverse approach has included singers from age 7 to 75 and audience members who never before realized that opera can be fun!

History   (top)
Obsidian Opera was founded in 1997 by Sharon Goodmonson with a mission to develop community through the sharing of vocal music and musical theater. Now a non profit serving Central Oregon and the Pacific Northwest, we have provided singers and audience members with productions ranging from full-length operas and one-act comedies to scenes incorporating repertoire written by the great opera masters as well as composers of Broadway musicals. This diverse approach has included singers from age 7 to 75 and audience members who never before realized that opera can be fun!

Education is an important part of our mission and is a component of everything we do. From pre-show lectures by Maestro Michael Gesme to master classes in singing and acting for our performers, Obsidian Opera has enriched the lives of many people. Our outreach educational program has taken presentations into the lives of hundreds of school-age children, incarcerated youth, and senior citizens. Our scholarships have provided financial assistance to local singers for further study and have awarded recognition to exceptional vocal talent in the Pacific Northwest.

The singers of Obsidian Opera have provided entertainment for resort and private dinner parties and have stepped in to assist other groups who require vocal expertise to accomplish their goals. Our Victorian Carolers entertain all around the area during the holiday season. Our productions have involved collaborations with the Central Oregon School of Ballet and have used many young singers from the Youth Choir of Central Oregon. This spirit of community involvement and willingness to collaborate has been a driving force behind the profound success of this young company.

To Clap or not to clap
For today's audience, behavior is a mixture of enthusiasm and respect. Concentration and silence in the theater are essential, out of respect for the stage performers, orchestra and fellow audience members. It's best to avoid things like wrapping paper, reading the program notes aloud, humming along, rummaging through purses, or anything that could disturb those around you.

However, opera aficionados are a boisterous lot, and their exuberance will show itself at appropriate moments. In comic opera, laughter is a primary goal, and you should never feel shy about laughing. In both comic and serious work, applause is generally shared after overtures, arias, ensembles, and acts. Don't worry too much about it, the rest of the audience will let you know when the moment is right.
